Looking for a Minecraft server where you can build a town, join or create a nation, trade with other players and shape the world around you? If you are new to the system, our Minecraft Towny beginner guide explains how towns, claims and nations work. We tested five different nations-focused servers in September 2026 to see how they actually feel to join and play.
Instead of ranking servers only by their feature lists, we looked at the things a new player notices immediately: current activity, onboarding, world type, towns and nations, live maps, RPG progression, custom bosses, cosmetics and the overall presentation of each server.

1. MineKai – Towny With More to Do
MineKai takes the familiar towns-and-nations structure and builds a wider survival experience around it. The server is not based on a real-world Earth map, so countries and borders are created entirely by players rather than being tied to existing geography.

More Than Towny
The biggest difference is that Towny is only one part of the progression. Players who want to learn the system in detail can also use our complete Minecraft Towny commands list. MineKai also includes RPG skills, custom bosses and a more visual progression layer, making it a better fit for players who like the idea of towns and nations but do not want the entire server to revolve around land claims and politics alone.
MineKai is also the only server in this comparison built around a medieval fantasy setting. Its world avoids modern weapons, firearms, lasers and similar technology, keeping the atmosphere focused on a more traditional fantasy-style Minecraft experience.
For a closer look at progression, see the MineKai Skills guide.
Spawn and Onboarding
MineKai uses a dedicated spawn and a more guided first-time experience. That makes the opening minutes more structured than on servers such as EarthMC, where you enter the playable world almost immediately.
Towns, Nations and a Custom World
The lack of an Earth map changes the style of nation building. Instead of recreating Germany, France or another real country, players start with a blank Minecraft world and gradually create their own towns, borders and political landscape. Our Towny plots guide covers how claimed land, plot types and permissions work.
2. EarthMC – For Players Who Mainly Want Towny and Nations
EarthMC had by far the highest player count in our test, with 292 players online in the same snapshot. Its approach is also the most direct: there is very little traditional onboarding, no elaborate spawn sequence and little visual UI between you and the actual game.
You join and begin playing. For players who already know what they want from Towny-style gameplay, that simplicity can be a strength rather than a weakness.

A Straightforward Nations Experience
EarthMC is the strongest option here for someone who primarily wants towns, nations, territory and a large existing player population without needing a heavy RPG layer around it. The Earth setting also gives every location immediate context: geography already means something before players build anything.
Presentation
During our test, EarthMC used very little decorative chat formatting or server-side visual presentation. Compared with newer servers, the experience feels intentionally minimal. There are skills, but the first impression is still much closer to a focused Towny world than to an RPG server.
3. Stoneworks – A Nations World With Its Own Identity
Stoneworks had 50 players online during our test. Unlike EarthMC, it uses a dedicated spawn and has a much more obvious server identity from the moment you join.
The interface and presentation felt older and less polished to us than newer servers, but Stoneworks also feels like a world that has existed for a long time rather than a fresh server built around a modern UI.

A Custom World Instead of Earth
This is important for players comparing nations servers. Stoneworks, like MineKai, does not rely on real-world geography. The attraction is the server's own map, settlements and history rather than recreating existing countries.
4. RulerCraft – Small, Friendly and Easy to Approach
RulerCraft was much smaller during our test, with six players online, but it produced one of the friendliest first impressions. After joining and asking a question, another player responded and helped us almost immediately.
The spawn also looks good and feels more deliberately presented than EarthMC's minimal entry experience. The main issue we ran into was simply figuring out how to leave the spawn and start playing.

More Than a Bare Towny Server
RulerCraft includes RPG skills and custom bosses, so it sits closer to the feature-rich side of this comparison than EarthMC. Its biggest question is scale: a smaller community can feel personal and welcoming, but players looking for a very active geopolitical world may prefer a larger population.
5. CCNet – Interesting Structure, Difficult First Test
CCNet was the hardest server in this comparison to evaluate fairly. It separates Towny and Nations into different modes, with Towny appearing to serve as the more peaceful option while Nations focuses more heavily on geopolitical gameplay.
During our test, however, the Nations server was unavailable to us. The multiplayer list showed zero players online, and after entering the accessible world and using /spawn, we ended up stuck in an area that made the onboarding difficult to understand.

Because we could not properly test the Nations mode, we are not assigning CCNet a specific “best for” category here. Its concept may be deeper than the test experience suggests, but this ranking focuses on what a new player can actually access and understand when joining.

Established Server or Fresh Start?
Server age changes the experience more than it may seem. Established nations servers have obvious advantages: years of history, developed towns, experienced communities and economies that have had time to grow. For many players, that is exactly the appeal.
A newer server offers something different. The economy is still developing, more valuable positions are still open, towns and nations have not had years to accumulate power, and new players have a much more realistic chance to become one of the richest players, lead a major town or build a nation that becomes part of the server's early history.
MineKai is the youngest server in this comparison, launching in 2026. That makes it particularly interesting for players who enjoy the early stage of a multiplayer economy: a cleaner world, less accumulated wealth and a leaderboard that has not already been dominated by the same veteran players for years.
That does not automatically make a new server better. If you want the largest established community and years of existing infrastructure, an older server such as EarthMC may be more attractive. But if your goal is to start early, compete for the top positions and help shape a world while it is still young, newer nations servers have a major advantage.
If wars and competition between towns are the part that interests you most, our Towny Wars guide explains the different ways Towny-based servers can handle conflict.
Earth Map or Custom World?
The biggest design difference between these servers is not a plugin or a UI feature. It is the world itself.
EarthMC, RulerCraft and CCNet use an Earth-based setting, which is ideal if you want recognizable geography and the fantasy of building a nation in a real place. MineKai and Stoneworks take the opposite approach: the map starts as its own world, and players create the countries, borders and history themselves.
Neither format is automatically better. Earth maps provide instant context. Custom worlds give players more freedom to create something that belongs entirely to that server.
Which Minecraft Nations Server Should You Play?
If you are still comparing different styles of Towny gameplay, see our guide to choosing the best Minecraft Towny server for the main features worth checking before you join.
If you mainly want a large and focused Towny/nations experience, EarthMC is the clearest choice in this comparison. If you want a custom-world nations server with a long-established identity, Stoneworks is more interesting.
RulerCraft stood out for its friendly small-community feel, while CCNet was difficult to judge because its Nations mode was not accessible during our test.
MineKai makes the most sense for players who like towns and nations but want more than Towny alone: RPG skills, custom bosses, visual cosmetics and other progression systems give you things to do even when you are not expanding territory or managing a town.
FAQ
What is a Minecraft nations server?
A Minecraft nations server lets players organize settlements into larger political groups, usually with towns, claimed land, economies, alliances or conflict between different groups.
Are nations servers the same as Towny servers?
Not always. Towny is a specific town-and-nation system used by many Minecraft servers, while “nations server” describes the broader style of gameplay. A nations server can use Towny, a custom system or another plugin entirely.
Are Earth maps better for nations servers?
They are better for players who want real-world geography and recognizable countries. Custom maps are better suited to servers where players are expected to create their own political world from scratch.
Which server is best if I want more than Towny?
MineKai is built around Towny but adds RPG skills, custom bosses, cosmetics and additional progression, making it the most feature-diverse option in this comparison for players who do not want Towny to be the only gameplay loop. You can also compare these systems in our Minecraft server features guide.
Want to Build a Nation From the Beginning?
MineKai is still at the stage where its economy, towns and political landscape are being created. If you would rather compete for the top early than join years after everything was established, this is the time to start.
