Town Ranks: Permissions & Commands
From recruiting new residents to managing territory and town finances, each rank gives its holder a different responsibility. This guide shows exactly what every Town Rank can do on MineKai — and the commands needed to do it.
Seven assignable roles. One clear chain of responsibility. All rank permissions are based on MineKai’s Towny configuration.
🏰 How Do Town Ranks Work?
Every resident can use basic Towny features. The Mayor can assign one of seven additional ranks to share specific responsibilities with other town members. A rank changes what you are allowed to do — not how large your town is or how many residents it has.
Become a Resident
Use basic town chat, town travel, personal plot controls and bank deposits.
Receive a Role
Take on recruiting, construction, enforcement or financial responsibilities.
Help Run the Town
Higher ranks unlock their own tasks plus the abilities of lower ranks.
👤 Resident Basics: Available to Everyone
You do not need a special rank for everyday Towny gameplay. Every resident automatically receives basic commands for their town, personal plots and travel.

VIP
A trusted, tax-exempt resident
VIP is the first assignable town rank. Its only additional permission is town-tax exemption. It does not grant authority to manage residents, build on everyone’s land or control town settings.
Town-tax exemption. This rank adds a passive permission, not a new command.
Recruiter
Bring new residents into your town
Recruiters help grow the community by sending invitations to new players. They can also review which invitations have already been sent.
Inviting players and checking outgoing invites. Also includes VIP’s tax exemption.

Builder
Help shape the town
Builders receive permission to place and remove blocks on town-owned land. That makes the role suitable for roads, walls, public buildings, parks and other communal construction projects.
Build and break blocks on eligible town-owned plots. This is a land permission, not an extra chat command. Also includes Recruiter and VIP abilities.
Officer
Communicate and manage junior roles
Officers help coordinate the town. They can update the message board, send announcements and assign or remove the three junior ranks: VIP, Recruiter and Builder.

🎖️ Assigning and Removing Town Ranks
Mayors and authorised ranks can manage residents’ assignments with the same two command patterns. Use the exact rank name from the list above.
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
/town ranklist |
See which residents hold town ranks. |
/town rank add <player> <rank> |
Give an eligible resident a rank that you have permission to assign. |
/town rank remove <player> <rank> |
Remove that rank from a resident, when your permissions allow it. |
/town rank add Alex builder grants Alex all Builder, Recruiter and VIP permissions, as configured on MineKai. There is no need to assign all three ranks.
| Position | Rank-management permissions |
|---|---|
| Mayor | Can manage town ranks as town owner. |
| Officer | Can assign and remove VIP, Recruiter and Builder. |
| Sheriff | Officer and all ranks below it. |
| Treasurer | Officer and all ranks below it; does not receive an extra Sheriff-assignment permission. |
| Deputy | All seven assignable town ranks. |
🛡️ Town Land vs. Personal Plots
The biggest difference between some ranks is where their building and management permissions apply. These are not the same thing as the basic commands every resident can use on their own property.
🏗️ Town-owned land
Public roads, town buildings and plots owned by the town. Builders and all higher ranks can build and break eligible blocks there.
🏠 Personally owned plots
Land claimed by individual residents. Ordinary Builder permissions do not override personal plot ownership.
🤝 Town-wide trust
A Deputy may grant town-wide trust. MineKai does not automatically extend this trust to full access inside personally owned plots.
👑 Mayor-like plot access
Deputy holds a separate special permission to manage any town plot as Mayor. This is not the same as ordinary town-wide trust.
❓ Town Rank FAQ
Do ranks inherit permissions?
Yes. Every higher MineKai town rank already contains the permissions of all lower ranks.
Does VIP give free store perks?
No. Town VIP is a town-assigned tax-exempt role and is separate from MineKai shop packages.
Can a Builder change someone else’s home?
Not just by being a Builder. Their extra build and destroy permissions cover town-owned land, not personally owned plots.
Can Treasurer appoint Sheriff?
No. Treasurer inherits Officer rank-management permissions but does not have a separate permission to appoint Sheriff. Deputy can assign every Town Rank.
Can Deputy replace the Mayor?
Deputy cannot manually use Mayor-only ownership transfer simply through that rank. If Towny needs to pick a successor, however, MineKai prioritises Deputy.

Permissions described on this page reflect MineKai’s configured Towny ranks. A command may still be subject to town ownership, plot protection, economy requirements and server-specific restrictions.
